Skellig Michael is not the only Skellig Island. There is also Little Skellig which is home to one of the world’s largest Gannet Colonies. The landscape of Little Skellig is as spectacular as its bigger brother and can be seen from on board boats, but it is closed to the public.
Skellig Michael has got all the publicity in recent years, mainly because of the shooting of episodes of Star Wars there and it has become quite a tourist destination.
Before Star Wars, the island was best known for the ruins of the ancient sixth century monastery with its Beehive Huts.
It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is home to large colonies of seabirds including puffins, storm petrels, northern gannets, choughs, manx shearwater, fulmars and more.
Skellig Michael is accesssible during the Summer months with boat tours leaving from various locations on the mainland including Portmagee and Valentia Island. These tours have become so popular that they usually have to be booked month in advance.
The monastery is located at 600 feet above sea level and is quite a stiff climb by way of stone steps.
