Kenmare is one of Kerry’s prettiest and most popular towns. The Irish name for it ‘Neidín’ means ‘Little Nest’ and this describes, in a word, the location of the town in between the mountains of the Ring of Kerry and The Ring of Béara. The town is bristling with colour with many particularly attractive shopfronts and shop signs. This is a great visitor town with lots of little shops and numerous cafes, restaurants and pubs.
Kenmare was, in the past, noted for its fine lace, and it can still be prchased there today.
What’s in Kenmare?
The town has its own 18 hole golf course and a leading GAA Club which is active in both hurling and football. The surrounding area is popular with hill walkers and it is the destination of the Killarney to Kenmare walking trail on The Kerry Way.
In the surrounding countryside there are numerous rivers and lakes popular with anglers fishing for trout and salmon and the bay is a popular destination for deep sea anglers and others involved in water sports.
There are numerous accommodation options in the area including B&Bs, Self Catering and Hotels. There are two fabulous 5 Star hotels, The Sheen Falls and The Park Hotel which is run by The Brennan Brothers, John and Francis of ‘At Your Service’ television fame.
